Instructional Objectives


Get Real coverStudents will be able to

- Define product placement, give other examples of nontraditional advertising, and evaluate its effect on their own consumer choices.
- Contrast the population/consumption ratio in North America with the population/consumption ratio in Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East.
- Recall at least two impacts of bottled water (environmental, economic, and/or health).
- Discuss the prevalence of untested chemicals in fast food and other products.
- Define food miles and explain the environmental impact of shipping food long-distance.
- Summarize the life-cycle of plastic packaging from petroleum to landfill.
- Compare the hours, wages, and working conditions of a CEO with a typical factory worker, and define sweatshop.
- Identify choices with different impacts, including buying fair trade, buying less, and buying local.
- List questions they can ask to become better-informed consumers.
